Tips & Area

Zaandam City Center

Zaandam is the city for the shopping enthusiast. With a wide variety of stores, Zaandam is proud to call itself one of the nicest shopping cities.

Zaanse Schans

The Zaanse Schans is a neighborhood with wooden buildings in the Zaanstad municipality. It’s located along the Zaan river, across from the village Zaandijk, and next to the Julianabrug. It’s a famous tourist destination, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors every year (1.8 million in 2016, 2.2 million in 2017).[1] It was set up with the intention of preserving the historical heritage, but it’s not a closed, open-air museum. The houses are inhabited, so it's not just tourists visiting the area.

Zaans Museum

The Zaans Museum is a cultural history museum located in the Zaanse Schans, in the Dutch municipality of Zaanstad. The museum was founded in 1998 and exhibits cultural, historical, and regional collections about the living and industrial culture of the Zaan region. Everyone knows the famous Zaan brands, such as Verkade, Lassie, and Albert Heijn.  In the Zaans Museum, you’ll learn all about the rich industrial history of the Zaan region.  Next to the main building, the museum has three locations with living history on the Zaanse Schans: the Kuiperij, the Jisperhuisje, and Wevershuis. The Zaans Museum also includes the Czaar Peter House in the center of Zaandam.

Czaar Peter House

The Czaar Peter House in Zaandam is a wooden cottage dating from 1632.  It was named after the Russian tsar, Peter the Great, who lived in the cottage for a short period. The cottage is one of the oldest houses constructed of Dutch timber, and has been covered, for protection, by a stone museum hall since 1823.

Amsterdam

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is known for its artistic heritage, extensive canal network, and narrow gable houses, a legacy from the Golden Age. In the Museumkwartier, you’ll find the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, with works by Rembrandt and Vermeer, and the Stedelijk Museum, which houses contemporary art. Cycling is inextricably linked to the city’s character and there are many cycling paths.

Cycling routes through the Zaanstreek

Cycling is an ideal way to explore the diversity of the Zaan region. The greenery and the industry, the villages and the city, the new and the old architecture: all are connected to each other by the beautiful Zaan river.

The first two (Heritage) bicycle routes can be started from both Amsterdam Central Station as well as Zaandam station. Whether you use a traditional bike or e-bike, the Zaan region and Amsterdam are closer than ever: only 15 kilometers of cycling! The routes will show you the two sides of our region we are most proud of: our industrial heritage, and the Zaanse greenery.

The other two routes have the Zaanse Schans as a starting point, so you can combine a visit to the Schans with an explorative tour of the surroundings.

The park also offers thirty floral shows that change weekly, seven inspiration gardens, hundreds of artworks, a beautiful windmill, and a play area. Haarlem

There’s plenty to do in Haarlem, all year round. Discover the city that’s known for its high-quality cultural offerings, great diversity of shops, cozy restaurants and cafes, and excellent location near Amsterdam, beach and sea. A city with a rich history, beautiful monuments, and a Burgundian atmosphere. The ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend away, also with your children!

Alkmaar

You’ll never forget your first visit to Alkmaar. You’ll keep wanting to come back to this beautiful city, which is only half an hour away from Amsterdam and 15 minutes away from the North Sea beach.  Wandering along the monuments, canals, shops, museums, and terraces, you’ll be amazed by the beauty...
